In 1759 this cottage in Sandwich, UK, was the home and shop of Thomas Paine, founding father of the United States and French Republic. He created the phrase 'United States of America', and was author of three of the bestsellers of the eighteenth century, including the cornerstone of American democracy, Common Sense plus the bible of English radicalism, the Rights of Man.

Thomas Paine's cottage (the cottage)

The cottage has been carefully restored and furnished with period items of furniture that enable the visitor to relax and enjoy a period atmosphere. The cottage is larger than the frontage would suggest having had a Victorian kitchen extension. There is a good sized living room with a reading area containing an excellent collection of revolutionary period literature and of course all of Paine's works. The stairs lead to a bedroom with two period single beds and a wonderful early Victorian dresser of mahogany, the upstairs rooms are wonderfully characterful with their beamed ceilings and walls and floors with extraordinary slopes on them. The next bedroom has a beautiful mahogany double bed from ~ 1870. The bathroom upstairs has both a shower and bath. There is a log fire in the living room and a good supply of logs are included in the rental fee. Parking is free of charge in the Guildhall car park a few minutes walk from the cottage. There is a south facing cottage garden for visitors to enjoy, its carefully tended and is a typical English cottage garden full of flowers during the summer months.
