More about Gate House (the location)

Gate House is situated in the heart of Freshwater Bay, an area of outstanding natural beauty in the west Wight. The house not only overlooks the sea but is also located at the foot of Tennyson Down and the Heritage Coastal Trail. In addition it backs onto the path to Afton Marsh and Freshwater Way leading to the River Yar, with the Freshwater Bay golf club on the other side of the bay.

With its stunning shingle and sandy beaches just over the road, Gate House offers the perfect location for a relaxing self-catering holiday in comfort and style. It will comfortably sleep 11 with the option for a further 4 guests in two sofabeds - perfect for a holiday with friends or families sharing, or an extended family get-together.

The house was originally part of a Victorian hotel built in the 1860's and has been recently renovated by its present owners, Simon, a scenic painter in film and TV and Sam, who previously worked as a Buyer for The Conran Shop and Heal's. The property enjoys a number of period features with a relaxed and artistic finish throughout.

There is an old fashioned grocer's shop up the road and a pub and restaurant within walking distance. There are also a wide variety of shops and services in Freshwater village, a mile away.

Other beaches to visit a short 10-15 minute drive away include the sandy Compton Bay on the wild south west coast, popular with surfers. On the north west coast, Alum Bay is famous for its multi-coloured sands and view of the Needles. Further east are the sandy bays of Totland and Colwell which are perfect to watch the sun go down from.

The harbour town of Yarmouth is 3 miles away, the River Yar estuary 1m, Newtown Creek 6m, Newport 10m, Cowes 15m.
