If you have an interest in seafaring history, Staithes is exactly the right place to learn more.Try a visit to the fascinating Captain James Cook Staithes Heritage Centre with a street scene of life in Staithes in the year 1745. Learn about Captain Cook's life and travels, and see beautiful original engravings, maritime exhibits and pictures and paintings of Staithes life. Delve into the fascinating stories of smuggling in Staithes. At one time, Staithes was one of the primary fishing (and smuggling) ports in the country. The village has an almost Mediterranean air to it, with its tightly-packed white-washed cottages jumbled together under red tile rooftops.

For children: children of all ages can be seen enjoying rockpooling in the many pools along the sandy beaches.Or try your hand at crabbing with a line. You can take a fishing or boat trip in one of the amazing local fishing cobles. Fossils abound on this Jurassic “Dinosaur Coast” and ammonites are easily discovered. Or your children may enjoy a trip to nearby Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay or Scarborough for traditional family seaside fun and a superb choice of beautiful beaches. Another popular activity with children is the timeless North Yorkshire Moors Railway where they can travel through dramatic North Yorkshire Moors scenery on an historic steam train.

Walkers can find their path on the gorgeous Cleveland Way trail and enjoy the National Park Heritage Coast's beautiful moorland and coastal scenery. You will never be far from an interesting village (Heartbeat country!)or a traditional pub where you can take a well-deserved rest.

Eating and Drinking. Staithes has a good choice of traditional local pubs with real ales and good variety, good value pub meals. Try the Cod and Lobster Inn on the seafront or the Royal George in the centre of the village. You can also choose from several friendly cafes, tearooms and bistros with sea views.

The Artists of Staithes. Staithes has always had a fascination for artists, due to its picturesque scenery and clear pure light. Visit the art galleries in the centre of the village to see the artists' work on show and on sale.
