More about Bluebell Cottgage (the location)

An idyllic small cottage for two tucked away along a quiet country lane; no crowds, few cars, just wonderful high fells, a beautiful river and ancient woodlands to explore in a lovely quiet valley of old Westmorland. ‘Bluebell’ is a delightful place; it has just been completely renovated to a very high standard and is luxuriously comfortable. The cottage is furnished in country style with Liberty and Laura Ashley fabrics, antique pine furniture, an old elm staircase and little curios in the nooks and crannies. Everything is included in the price; central heating, logs in winter, electricity and all linen including sumptuous towels and bathrobes.

Bluebell has its own private garden surrounding the cottage; this is lovely, with a natural stream and interesting country garden plants. There are seats to sit in the sun and seats to sit in the shade – all with wonderful views – and garden furniture for outdoor meals on the terrace overlooking the stream.

The scenery around the Cottage is beautiful; high fells, woodland, meadows and rushing river. Wild flowers flourish and wildlife abounds; deer, otters, peregrines and many other rare birds. A handwritten guidebook, especially for guests, describes walks straight from the door and equally beautiful ones nearby with a short drive.

Sedbergh is the nearest big village and is now a ʻbook townʼ so has lots of places to browse around and one or two antique shops. Dent is a very pretty village with cobbled streets and interesting art galleries. And Kirkby Lonsdale is just lovely; touristy but unspoilt, this beautiful, tiny market town has lots of interesting shops, great places for lunch, cafe bars with pretty gardens, really good restaurants, a very attractive ancient church and glorious river-side walks.

Then, there are all the activities of the Lake District to discover; lake sailing on Ullswater, rowing on Grasmere, easy climbing up Cat Bells by Derwentwater, adventures in Grisedale Forest, visiting Beatrice Potter’s House, Wordsworth’s Grasmere, coffee at Miller Howe (wonderful!), lunch at The Mason’s Arms at Strawberry Bank (after an easy walk up Gummer’s Howe overlooking Windermere) and also suggestions for some of the best walks in the Lake District, often with a country pub along the way; or a boat trip across Ullswater to Howtown with a wonderful walk back along the lake edge to Glenridding.

Also in the guidebook: quaint, pretty villages, the best of the country pubs and some ‘off the beaten track’ suggestions too. And always returning to the wonderful tranquillity surrounding Bluebell Cottage.
